I believe that a certain amount of time has to pass before the initial separation, or else the relationship is doomed.
I met Alex at church in South Carolina, a few months before he was to go back to California (he was here for a military training academy.) We didn't start dating until a month and a half before he was to leave, but when we did I fell head over heels in love with him, and he told me he felt the same way. I believed he was The One. He invited me out to California and mentioned a job prospect for me that would enable me to live out there with him. All was fine and glorious until he left.
One night a few weeks later I called him and got his sister instead. She warned me off of her own brother, saying, "He was with two other girls while he was with you in Charleston. He's invited them out here too, just as he has you."
My first instinct was to disbelieve the sister and assume she was crazy. Alex had only treated me with honesty and decency, I thought, and now I was hearing he was a lying scumbag? But when I confronted him the next night, I found out it was true. Alex's personal problems went even deeper than I had had time to know. He is a horribly confused person.
Even after he'd been found out, he wanted me to come to California for him. I said no way--it was me or no one. And if he had really wanted that, he would have offered to fly to South Carolina.
My point is that trust must have time to grow and solidify before a relationship can take a crosscountry move. I might have stuck it out and worked on the relationship had we both been in the same town, but not now. Make sure you know your partner WELL before getting into an LDR.
