Long Distance Relationship
I met Alex on a High School Diplomats trip to Japan two summers ago and we instantly hit it off. We were so compatible as friends that toward the end of the three-week trip we started realizing how much we'd miss eachother when we got back to America and went home to our respective states (Maine and Virginia). At the airport in Chicago, on our way home, as I was about to board the plane, Alex ran over and grabbed me and kissed me. I was so elated I couldn't do anything but wave goodbye, but I drove down to see him the very next week! We have been dating happily ever since, though we've had some rough times, especially recently with him graduating from college and trying to find an appropriate job. ![]() We've decided that it's not worth it for him to move to Maine while I finish my last two years of college, so are going to stick it out until I graduate and be together permanently then. On top of only seeing eachother once every few weeks for our entire relationship, we also survived me traveling around Europe last spring for four months by myself. I was only able to call once or twice a week and we didn't see eachother for an entire semester and I must admit that while I was gone my feelings for Alex started to numb; the second I saw him again at the airport, though, all my old feelings for him came rushing back. I realized that I was only protecting myself by feeling numb so that I wouldn't ruin my trip moping around, but that I still loved him just as much as I had before I left. I agree with Stephen that if your relationship is solid and meant to be, it can survive long-distance and even thrive from it. Ours certainely has. :) Marian, Maine, USA
