Long Distance Relationship
Story of the Week
January 12, 2002, I was celebrating my 30th birthday and I wanted to do something that I'd never done before. Being a single parent and working two jobs doesn't leave me with a lot of time for myself. Exploring the world-wide-web was something I've never done that could help me meet new people and socialize with others. After surfing the net and visiting many websites, I decided to become a member of www.blackplanet.com, an African-American community based website. After setting up my member page, I began receiving notes from other members of the website, who were mostly men. I met many people thru the website, and I did manage to meet a friend or two but no one I could see myself getting involved with until the day I received a note from jab5226.
Joseph and I met in April 2002 while online. We began e-mailing notes to each other through the website and shortly thereafter exchanged our names and phone numbers. Because of the unmistakable connection between us, we decided to proceed with establishing a friendship. In getting more acquainted with Joseph, not only did I see how good of a friend he had become, I also realized the qualities he possessed seemed to appeal to me. That is when I began to fall in love with him. By this time, we came to the realization of how strong our feelings were for each other. It was then that we saw the need to take our friendship to the next level by arranging a meeting and spend some time together. In December 2002, which was 8 months after we met, I flew to New York City where we met each other in person for the first time.
I'll never forget seeing him in the airport greeting me with a beautiful smile, a hug and a kiss, and did I mention how handsome he looked? Joseph turned out to be everything I had hoped. In the 2 days we spent together, we got along great and really enjoyed each other's company. It was finally time for me to return home to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
I hated to see our time together come to an end. On the plane ride home, my mind was filled with visions of his face, his smile, thoughts of his touch and the times we just spent together which were now memories frozen in time. Some time has passed since our visit and Joseph and I are still together. Our relationship grows with each new day. We have our ups and downs as does all relationships, but the three things that make our relationship strong are faith, hope and love.
Faith in God and each other, hope for the future and immeasurable love for each other. I feel truly blessed to receive such a precious gift. There are millions of people who search a lifetime for what we've found in each other; that is what makes our relationship that much more special. I also am very thankful to God for sending me a mate tailor-made for my soul, A Love of My Own.
