Long Distance Relationship
Story of the Week
I was always the type of person that did not beleive in a long distance relationship. However, I had recently travelled to Italy and I met someone that is one of the most caring, sensitive and intelligent men that I have ever known. The secret to keeping the long distance relationship alive is to always be sure to send very simple, yet romantic gifts. I have been able to keep the relationship going by sending simple gifts, such as scented candles, or some type of photo of Italy that I know will rekindle a special memory.
Also, I try to send a simple gift at least once a month. We both take turns calling each other once per week, and we always begin our conversation with something humorous, or a funny story. I have found that adding humor to a conversation relaxes the other person, and keeps the conversation "positive" and "upbeat".
Telephone conversations that are humorous, and positive keep the romance going, and it is important to avoid getting too "negative" about the distance, or emphasizing how far away you are from the other person. Also, I send one love letter per month. The love letter always ends with a special thought, such as "each time you look at the places we were together, or the house that we stayed in, just remember that I never really left. Each day I think of you more and more, and my heart is always there". Planning surprise visits are always fun, and it takes the pressure off.
If you spend too much time asking "when will I see you again?" it can get too complicated. Instead, we just spontaneously plan visits only about two or 3 weeks in advance, (and when the airfare is the cheapest) So, I guess you can say that for me, keeping the gifts simple, and inexpensive (yet romantic and thoughtful) are important in keeping the long distance relationship alive! Also, taking turns calling each other, and keeping the conversation humorous eliminates the chance of focusing on how far apart you are.
Avoiding negative conversations is the key! Sending one love letter per month makes the person feel as though you never really left!
